The Pillar
An Ionic column, cut from nothing but code and lit from above. Scroll, and walk round it.
The base
A square plinth, and on it two rings of stone with a hollow between them: the Attic base, the foot of the slenderest order.
The shaft
Twenty-four flutes run its height, cut into drums laid one upon another. It narrows as it rises.
The capital
At the top the stone curls into a volute at each corner of each face, like a scroll half unrolled. Vitruvius likened them to curling locks of hair.
The pillar
“Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out.”
